Shimoda Action X40 v2 Backpack Starter Kit
The Action X40 is designed for aggressive photographers with serious gear needs. It's an efficient and fast access backcountry camera bag, built for action in foul weather, ever-changing environments and challenging terrain.
The X40 is designed to carry gripped bodies and will comfortably fit most mirrorless and DSLR cameras (up to 6.7 in or 17cm tall) via our DSLR Core Unit series. Its roll-top access allows users to expand or compress the volume to the demands of the day. It features multiple attachment straps, including TPU compression straps for greater durability when attaching skis, and its removable helmet holder lets users secure mountaineering, ski or bike helmets to the outside of their pack.
Action X's interchangeable and adjustable shoulder straps feature two zippered pockets to carry the latest iPhone Pro Max phones, a water bottle, or personal accessories. The Action X25, X30, X40 and X50 feature side camera access and two removable tripod or water bottle pouches that can be moved to the belt location for instant access to key accessories like snacks and lenses, or removed completely to save weight. Two padded sleeves protect laptops and tablets up to 16 inches. Finally, the removable belt, luggage-handle pass-through and hidden AirTag sleeve make the Action X40 a stealthy and stylish partner in urban and travel environments.

- Adjustable Torso Height – The X40 has three height options with approximately 9 cm (3 in) of vertical adjustment. This means the same backpack can fit short or taller — male or female — torso heights, ensuring a custom fit for everyone. Those with taller or broader torsos can add our Booster Kit for greater range in torso fit.
- Core Unit Modular Camera Insert System – The X40 utilizes our DSLR Core Unit series. Core Units provide shockproof protection for Mirrorless and DSLR cameras and lenses, and ensure a user never carries more padding and weight than necessary. The X40 v2 can accommodate our Small, Medium, Large DSLR sizes. It can also accept our shallower Mirrorless series.
- Dual Laptop/Tablet Sleeves – Both rear and front panel padded sleeves fit a laptop up to 16 inches in size. Having two sleeves lets you pack both a tablet and laptop while providing options for various packing scenarios.
- Expandable Roll-Top Access – We gave the Action X series a roll-top access so the bag can be adjusted to your gear needs while maintaining a tight and compact fit. The roll top can expand with a volume range of 7 liters. The top section also has an additional quick-access YKK SplashGuard® zipper that makes getting at your gear extremely quick and easy, especially in foul weather.
- Hidden Tracking Device Sleeve – A new hidden sleeve holds a personal tracking device so you always know where your pack is. In the unfortunate scenario your pack goes missing, a tracker can assist in discovering its location and recovering your gear. The sleeve accommodates AirTag and Tile Pro devices.
Shimoda Medium DSLR Core Unit v2
The Medium DSLR Core Unit V2 integrates seamlessly with the side access of the Action X40, X50, and Explore 35 backpacks. It will also fit in our Carry On and DV rollers.
It includes all the popular features of our Core Unit system, including EVA laminated dividers and sidewalls, a lightweight and versatile removable skin, and an aluminum frame to add extra rigidity and support.
The DSLR depth is ideal for mirrorless and DSLR cameras (including gripped bodies) up to 16 cm (6.3 in) tall along with lenses as long as a 70-200mm 2.8.
Core Unit Medium DSLR v2 Features:
- Pro Mirrorless/DSLR Camera Fit: Designed to fit mid- to Pro-size camera equipment such as gripped Mirrorless or gripped DSLR bodies as tall as the Canon EOS-1DX or Nikon D5 with lenses as long as 70-200mm 2.8. It is designed to fit gear with greater depth requirements, though it is just as useful for protecting a larger kit of mirrorless or compact DSLR gear.
- Quick Side Camera Access: Integrates seamlessly with the side access of the Action X50 backpack, and it will also fit in every available Shimoda backpack and roller with the exception of the Action X30.
- Modular Stacking: The Medium DSLR Core Unit V2 Unit allows a user the option to stack a Small Core Unit on top of the Medium -- creating similar volume to a Large insert. By doing this you can have greater range of owning both Medium and Small Core Units. For example: you have the option of using just the Small Unit, just a Medium Unit, or using both together to equal a Large Core Unit volume.
- Lightweight Water-Resistant & Multi-purpose Skin: The included Skin’s primary function is a storage case for the padded Core Units, ideal for when your gear is at home and not in use. It keeps the Core Unit sealed and dust free. Its secondary function is to use as a packing cell. A user can fill it with clothing or other common items and pack it in their backpack or carry-on roller.

With EVA we have greater control over the density and quality of materials used to protect your gear. It also means our walls can be thinner and use less internal volume while still providing superior protection.
